While these reviews might be helpful, they are not a substitute for the expertise, skill, knowledge and judgement of healthcare practitioners. Hi, I was diagnosed with RA and was put on sulfa, my rheumy tried adding mtx but i had awful side effects so am now on hydroxychloroquine and sulfa..this combination worked for anyone? Hi I've been on this combination for a few months and unfortunately it hasn't worked for me - but that's not to say it won't for you, we are all different in how we react to drugs. Sulphasalasine was helpful in my case but took 12 weeks to kick in.

This article primarily covers the author's experience with the use of the combination of methotrexate MTX, sulfasalazine SSZ, and hydroxychloroquine HCQ to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis RA. Sulfasalazine oral tablet is a prescription medication that's used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. According to the American College of Rheumatology, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, is a “disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD,” meaning that it helps reduce the pain and swelling that come with arthritis. It can also reduce the incidence of joint damage, thus lessening the risk of developing a long-term disability from complications of RA.

I'm about to start MTX & am hoping that I wont have side effects with that! The side effects of the methotrexate for me were horrendous (chronic chest infections) and I'm now asthmatic as a result. I've stopped Sulfa as I was experiencing a bad taste & smell, which may be caused by sulfa. After a while it wasn't as effective and I too was prescribed methotrexate alongside.
